Bottom position
A bottom position is a position where you are usually underneath an opponent, so are normally at a disadvantage if gravity and body weight are the only concerns. However, due to the use of guards, framing, and related concepts, a bottom position can easily become a dominant position, despite the common expectation that a bottom position would lead to an inferior position. A "closed guard" is an example of a guard position where you, on the bottom, are regarded as having the overall advantage and the dominant position. A top-mount, on the other hand, is a position where you, underneath on the bottom, would be regarded as in the inferior position.
