Gym Etiquette
Know how to not piss off your fellow Academy users by following these guidelines.
All students and attendees of MMA Academy are expected to follow these codes of conduct.
Jiu Jitsu USA's academy's code of ethics centers on Respect, Safety, Hygiene, and Humility, emphasizing honor, cleanliness (clean gi, trimmed nails, showering), proper mat etiquette (bowing, no shoes on mats, quiet during instruction, tapping early), and ego management to foster a supportive, injury-free environment where everyone, regardless of skill, learns and grows together.
It's about building character and representing the art positively, both on and off the mat, treating training partners as family and helping them improve.
Core Principles & Expectations
Respect: For instructors (calling them "Coach"), partners, the academy, and the mats (bowing on/off).
Safety: Prioritize safety, control strength, tap early, stop when partners tap, and stay home when sick.
Hygiene: Shower regularly, wear clean gis, trim nails, remove jewelry/piercings, and keep gear odor-free.
Humility: Check ego, learn from losses, don't boast, and focus on skill development over winning.
Discipline: Be punctual, listen during instruction, no phones on the mat, and no roughhousing or foul language.
Partnership: Train to make partners better ("iron sharpens iron"), offer help, and communicate clearly. Key Practices
Mat Etiquette: Bow when stepping on/off mats, no shoes, food, or drinks on mats.
Training Conduct: Tap early/often, don't coach without permission, be mindful of strength, and focus on technique.
Academy Pride: Keep the space clean, help clean mats, and behave honorably to reflect well on the gym.
Integrity: Win gracefully, lose humbly, and never use Jiu Jitsu to harm others outside self-defense. By adhering to these codes, members build a strong, positive community focused on personal growth, self-improvement, and the traditional values of martial arts.
