Randori

Randori

"Randori" is the term for competitive, resistive, free-style practice or sparring in Judo and other Japanese martial arts. This is known as "rolling" in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Unlike "kata" or "uchikomi" practice, where predetermined techniques are practiced with non-resistive, compliant partners, "randori" emphasizes trying to apply techniques both spontaneously according to tactics against a resistive, non-compliant opponent who is also trying to spontaneously apply their own techniques. "Randori" is still practiced within the bounds of rules designed to ensure the safe and effective practice of the given martial art.
