Scarf hold

Scarf hold

Scarf hold, known as "kesa-gatame" in Judo, is a variation of side control where you are rather sitting sideways on your hip, normally facing towards the opponents head, with legs straddled forward and backwards for stability, and your near arm loop around your opponent's neck like a scarf with his arm sticking out in front of you like the extension of a scarf.

This and its variations such as "kuzure kesa-gatame", or broken scarf hold, and "ushiro kesa-gatame", or reverse scarf hold, are useful control positions that afford a great deal of submission opportunities, much like side control itself, while allowing substantial possibilities to transfer into other control positions such as mount control, north-south control, or other nearby control positions easily as the situation demands.
