A top position is a position where you are specifically above your opponent, so you might normally have a gravity or body weight advantage. However, a top position does not automatically become a dominant position, if the opponent underneath in a bottom position has a more effective use of frames or entanglement to frustrate most advantages you might otherwise have. In a top position, you are obviously usually above a person who is regarded as in the bottom position.
